Tom Shanks
Data engineer in Denver. Most of my work is getting difficult data into a database that can answer questions about it.
For clients I've migrated fire-department hazard data, built PostGIS warehouses for emergency management, and run healthcare ETL on AWS Redshift and dbt.
Selected projects
ADS-B Aircraft Tracker
A $30 USB radio and a Raspberry Pi feeding over a million aircraft messages into PostGIS. The rule-based detection layer flagged a cluster of low-flying Army rotorcraft over Denver on its own.
Denver Urban Tree Classification
18,272 tree crowns classified from free LiDAR and satellite data. 69% accuracy across five forestry classes, validated with whole city blocks held out of training.
